What you can expect when you visit us for an HIV test
Getting Tested
Upon arriving at Project ARK, you will be introduced to one of our HIV/STD Prevention Specialists or a Peer Educator. These are trained staff members who can perform your HIV and Syphilis tests and answer any questions you may have about the tests, HIV and other STDs, sexual health, etc. We have staff who are heterosexual and those who are members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) communities. Be assured that we have culturally sensitive staff members who can assist you. Please note that most of our Prevention Specialists have higher education degrees and considerable training, but specific health related issues should be referred to your physician.
The Prevention Specialist will take you to a space where you can speak confidentially. Your medical records are of course confidential, meaning no one has access to them except authorized Project ARK personnel. Project ARK abides by strict confidentiality laws called HIPAA. You will be asked to sign a consent form giving the Prevention Specialist the authority to perform your HIV test and/or syphilis test and acknowledging that you understand that this is a confidential test.
In consultation with your Prevention Specialist, you will decide which HIV test is most appropriate for you. We now offer 2 types of HIV testing:
OraQuick - OraQuick tests for HIV1 and HIV2 antibodies and is a painless finger prick test. A drop of blood from your finger is collected and results are typically available in 20 minutes (your counselor will give you further information at the time of the counseling/testing session). OraQuick is offered based on supply availability and client eligibility.
Blood Testing for HIV - Traditional blood testing through venipuncture. Results are availalbe in 1-2 weeks. When testing through blood, you might as well get a free Syphilis test as well!
(Not all testing services are available on a walk in basis, appointments strongly encouraged.)
Together, with the Prevention Specialist, you will complete a risk assessment form. The Prevention Specialist will ask for your name, contact information, and some personal questions regarding your HIV testing and sexual history. These questions are designed to help the Prevention Specialist to advise you as to whether or not you've been at risk for HIV or other STDs, what you can do to lower your risk in the future, and whether or not you should be re-tested for HIV in the future. So that we can provide you with the best counseling services, when discussing your risk assessment with the specialist, please be accurate and detailed when providing information.
For all methods of HIV testing, on your risk assessment form, a number will be written. To ensure your confidentiality, you will be identified by this number in the future. When you call to see if your results have been received from the lab, you should provide this number to the staff; not your name.
If you qualify for one of our incentive programs, the Prevention Specialist will discuss this option with you. Be sure to mention how you heard about our services, as this may qualify you for our incentive program. You will also be offered a free package of safer sex information and materials (condoms and lubricant).
Receiving Results
Results are usually given at the Project ARK office. If prior arrangements are made with staff, results may be able to be given at other locations. The timing of results will vary depending on what HIV testing method you receive: OraSure testing results return from the lab within 2-3 weeks of the test. OraQuick testing results are available in 20 minutes. Blood testing results are available in 1-2 weeks. In all cases, only the client can receive his or her HIV test results and they must be given face-to-face. Results cannot be given over the phone, email, or by mail.
You should call Project ARK at 314-535-7275 to see if your results are back from the lab. This will save you a trip should your results not be in. When you call, you will be asked to provide your testing number, the location you got tested, and when you got tested. If you have lost your testing card we will also need to know your name.
Preferably the same Prevention Specialist who performed your HIV test also gives your test results. Scheduling an appointment Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, ensures that you see the same Prevention Specialist. However, you can authorize any of the Prevention Specialists to give your results to you. Our walk-in hours are Monday - Friday, 11am - 4pm, for those who cannot make a specific appointment time.
To receive your results you must have a picture ID. Returning with your testing card will help us to locate your results faster; however, even if you lose your card we can still locate your results as long as you have your ID. No results can be given without your proper identification.
Copies of results can be given to clients who come into the office. Copies cannot be given when results are provided outside of the Project ARK office.
Health and Education for Youth and Young Adults (HEY) is a health care and community education program for youth ages 13-24 who may be at risk for HIV, or who are living with HIV/AIDS. We offer confidential medical care, support groups, psychosocial activities and access to community resources, free HIV antibody counseling and testing, and educational and interactive programs.
