Youth Advocacy Committee
The Youth Advocacy Committee (YAC) is a group of young people who serve as an advisory board for the St. Louis Region and Missouri. The primary goal of YAC is to help the City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri to better serve youth in HIV prevention and care. Overall, the youth/young adults who participate in YAC will help agencies to better support other youth (their peers) in making positive choices along their road of sexual development and responsibility.
PURPOSES of YAC:
- give input and advocate
- enhance leadership skills
- build peer relationships
- become empowered
- increase self-esteem
LOGISTICS of YAC:
- for youth between the ages of 13 - 24
- one monthly, 2-hour meeting
- free food at each meeting
- free bus tickets upon request
Members must reapply after one year of service in order to remain a part of the Youth Advocacy Committee. All interested youth/young adults between the ages of 13 and 24 who are open to working with peers from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Another aspect of the Youth Advocacy program involves establishing a structured process for taking HIV/STD prevention and care education into the middle and high schools in the St. Louis region. The project will include a small team of practicum students to help develop, plan and implement prevention education in the schools. If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your resume and pertinent information about your undergraduate studies or student involvement. If you have any questions or desire more information, feel free to contact the Youth Advocacy Coordinator of Project ARK.
Project ARK is a non-profit organization within the auspices of the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine Pediatrics Department and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, or disability.
